Marley Art will be showcasing her Mardi Gras and New Orleans themed artworks with live painting demonstrations on wine glasses. You can participate in the fun with glitzy Mardi Gras facepainting from artist Dana Diaz de Leon, and make your own Mardi Gras beaded necklace with artist Melissa Villadiego.

Craft Night at Fusion brings like-minded crafters together for an evening to hang out, work on your own projects or learn new techniques to apply to your own art!

Craft Night happens to fall on Black Friday this month, so come by after an afternoon of shopping and rest your feet!

It's once again a dual Craft Night! You can learn how to make soap using dyes, botanical and scents, then take it home the same evening. Also, you can learn to make Swarovski Snowmen Earrings using a simple wire wrapping technique. Participants will be able to take their earrings home with them to give as a gift or keep for themselves.

Cost for the Custom Soap is $8 per person for one bar and $12 per person for two, and all supplies and instructions included. We want to thank everyone for coming to the opening reception last month of Illuminated Forms, by Fusion artist Dawson Morgan. June 16th ~ Handmade Happy Hour

Beginning in June, Handmade Happy Hour will come to you twice a month! Every 1st Friday and 3rd Wednesday of the month, Fusion will be offering a variety of mini-classes. On June 16th, you can learn to make an sgraffito coaster or tile or create beautiful wire jewelry. It's free to attend, and classes are just $10 each!

Sgraffito
Sgraffito is the process of applying colored, liquefied clay (slip) to the surface of a contrasting clay body. After the slip dries, you are free to scratch and carve any design your heart desires into the surface. During this class, we will be creating a coaster or tile using black slip on a white clay body. Stencil designs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own as well. Price includes all materials as well as firing. This class requires student to pick up item at later date.

Wire Wrap Earrings
Learn how to make simple, yet stylish spiral earrings that you can wear everyday! During this class, you will learn basic wire techniques while having fun! The cost of the class is $10 and includes all materials

What Do YOU Do With Your Empty Beverage Bottles?

Did you know that a glass bottle takes 4000 years to decompose and can take up to a million years in a landfill? In 2008, Americans recycled 35% of their beer and soft drink bottles. That number represents a growing improvement in the amount we recycle and it sounds great, but that also means that 65% of these bottles are not being recycled!

Unlike many other materials, glass can be recycled over and over again without losing any quality. To recycle glass, it is crushed into cullet. When manufacturers use cullet to create new glass products rather than starting with fresh loads of soda ash, lime, and sand, it requires less energy and it reduces fossil fuel emissions. The Glass Packaging Institute cites some pretty compelling statistics:

Costs for energy drop about 2-3% for every 10% recycled glass containers used in the manufacturing process.

Using six tons of recycled container glass in the manufacturing process equals one ton of carbon dioxide reduced.

They boil the numbers down to a simple statement:

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 60-watt bulb for four hours, a computer for 30 minutes or a television for 20 minutes.

Yes, one person can make a difference!

Many neighborhoods and towns have curbside recycling programs, and most counties offer a local drop-off bin for glass, aluminum, and paper recycling. If you're not recycling yet, please check with your local government office for more information.

Recycling into Art
Many artists are not just making a difference, but adding to our culture by diverting some materials that would go to the landfill or the recycling center into a whole other recycling stream. Everything from glass bottles to candy wrappers to worn-out clothing is being used as an art material.

Fusion, an artist co-op at Chesterfield Mall in Chesterfield MO, has several artists who use primarily recycled materials.

Twice Baked Arts (http://www.twicebakedarts.com/) - Amy fuses post-consumer bottles and jars in a kiln to create dishes, candle holders, and other home decor and gift items. Her products are often amusing and food-related.
Goodlife Keepsakes (http://www.etsy.com/shop/goodlifekeepsakes) - Jeannette creates keepsake boxes, frames, stands, and more using reclaimed and upcycled wood and paper. You can be absorbed for hours by the captivating worlds she creates in miniature spaces!
The Crafty Wino (http://www.thecraftywino.com/) - Connie uses wine corks to create corkboards, pushpins, canape knives, and more. She also slumps wine bottles into platters and has a host of other wine-themed products.

You can participate in recycling by donating materials to an artist who can use them. If you have items that seem to fit with an artist's work, feel free to contact them directly. Or, check out The Upcycle Exchange. Their members accept donations of specific post-consumer items and left-over art materials. Plus they offer you discounts on their goods in exchange!

Thanks for a everyone who attended Fusion's Handmade Happy Hour last Friday! The next date for the event is May 21st where you can learn how make Resin Bottle Cap Magnets or have big fun with Shrink Art.

Resin Bottle Cap Magnets
This class teaches how to make decorative magnets that feature your own personal touch. The student learns to fill empty bottle caps (supplied) with resin, colors, and decorative papers creating fun and personalized magnets. He or she will be taught techniques that will be helpful in making resin jewelry as well as other resin arts and crafts. Students will be able to pick up their finished magnets during the next open business day. (Fusion is open every Wednesday - Sunday)

Shrink Art
Create your own fun, thick acrylic charms and beads! Learn a variety of techniques to color and create designs on shrink film to make charms, rolled beads, and molded flowers. Complete a magnet and two pins, plus have extra beads and charms left over for other projects. If you have an embossing heat gun, please bring it.

It's hard to believe only a month ago Fusion was a big (and I mean BIG) empty store with tired old paint, peeling wallpaper art and disjointed wood floor. But after a few late nights of moving fixtures, adding a fresh coat of paint in lovely ivory and deep chocolate brown, moving in inventory, we are excited to present Fusion, the newest art co-op in the St. Louis area! We are currently open for business, but join us for our Grand Opening celebration the 1st weekend of March.
